Sit brain, sit. Good brain.
These days I find myself with the seemingly never-ending struggle of balancing a rewarding career with rewarding life experiences. I have restarted my company, Slice of Lime, and have taken on a partner. We are aggressively seeking new clients and crossing our fingers that we will get more money in the door than is going out.
With all this work comes later nights of working, working on the weekends and less money. The reward is running our own show and possibly growing our company into a fun design firm.
But what about those sunny days I’m noticing going by outside my window? What about my mountain bike rusting in the garage? Hey, and what about that gut?
My business partner and I both agree that we work better when we don’t work – if that makes any sense. We try to make sure to get outside and get exercise, to go out with friends and “step away from the computer.” I’ve started to not check my email in the evening, for that usually sends me spinning into a flurry of thoughts instead of resting for the next day.
My good friend, Chad, is coming into town this Wednesday and we are going for a camping trip in the Great Sand Dunes National Monument in Colorado. It will be a four day vacation for me and, while work will be on my brain, I’m looking forward to enjoying life away from it. I know I will be a more pleasant person to work with when I return.
Getting away from work and financial issues is easier said than done for me. Hopefully the obvious value of having a balance of work and play will click in that curious brain of mine. For now, I will continue to try to take my brain for a walk as often as it will let me.

The great sand dunes were a lot of fun. Don’t forget the Zapata Falls. Killer.
